South Korea Wins 2018 Winter Olympics

Fox Sports: On it's third try Pyeongchang, South Korea, on Wednesday finally won the right to host the Winter Olympics, beating out Munich, Germany and Annecy, France, for the rights to the 2018 Games.

Employing a strategy that also worked for Sochi, Russia and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in their campaigns for the 2014 and 2016 games, respectively, Pyeongchang urged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to move past traditional European host countries.

Asia has not hosted the Winter Olympics since 1998 in Nagano, Japan. "Give us the chance to deliver the potential, the promise and, yes, the hope of Pyeongchang 2018 to millions of new hearts and minds around the world," communications director Theresa Rah told the IOC in Durban, South Africa.

It had earlier bid for the 2010 and 2014 competitions, losing to Vancouver, Canada and Sochi. Pyeongchang won an outright majority on the first ballot, forgoing the need for a second round. Exact vote totals were not announced. The third-largest South Korean city is located approximately 112 miles east of the capital, Seoul.
