Arizona Town Hosts 'Running of the Bulls USA'

Tucson Citizen: Running of the Bulls USA went off without a hitch Saturday in Cave Creek.

The event is touted as a safer version of the famous annual running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, immortalized by Ernest Hemingway in his novel “The Sun Also Rises.” Similar events have been held in Scottsdale and Mesquite, Nev.

Hundreds of daredevils came ready to run in a variety of costumes. Some had red bull’s-eyes painted on their backs, some wore red-and-white Spanish garb and others donned psychedelic wigs. All were ready to get their thrill on, and all were energized once they crossed the finish line.

As the event, which (progressed toward its halfway point Saturday), nobody had been injured, according to medical officials on site.

John Damasco, a Peoria resident and registered nurse at Arrowhead Hospital in Glendale, created his own T-shirt with his “bucket list” on the back, a short list of all the things he’d like to do before he dies. Saturday, he checked off item No. 12.

He said that when the starting gun went off, he knew the bulls would quickly make up the roughly 75-foot gap from the runners’ starting line.

“First you saw clouds of dirt, then the horns and then the bulls’ faces,” he said.

Damasco’s sister, wife and two children cheered him on from the sidelines of the quarter-mile track. Damasco said he had to persuade his wife, Sue, to let him run alongside more than 20 1,500-pound bulls. He said he was able to win her over because the event uses rodeo bulls, which are tamer and have duller horns than their Pamplona counterparts.

“He loves thrills, and he assured me that this is not like the bull run in Spain,” Sue Damasco said.

Leading up to the event, Cave Creek officials had received dozens of letters in opposition to the bull run, with some people planning to boycott the town. About 2,000 signatures have been gathered online protesting the event. Opponents say the bull run is harmful to the animals and could cause safety problems. Protesters were nowhere to be seen in Cave Creek on Saturday.

Phoenix resident Dean Lambrose survived the run and said that safety isn’t as big an issue as some people think. Lambrose received a rodeo scholarship to Weber State University in Utah.

“This is rodeo stuff,” he said. “These bulls are around humans all day long. They’re pretty domesticated. The traditional theory of running with the bulls has to do with running with them and alongside them. It’s when you start tormenting them that they start to get aggressive."

“This is a good thing. And it’s entertaining.”

Tourist in French Polynesia May Have Been Eaten

Stefan Ramin and Heike Dorsch
NY Post: Police in French Polynesia are investigating whether a German yachtsman who disappeared on a remote island was cannibalized -- since all that was found were remains in a smoldering campfire.

Stefan Ramin, 40, had been sailing around the world for the past three years with his girlfriend, Heike Dorsch, when he stopped on Nuku Hiva in the Marquesa islands in mid-September.

Ramin, a native of Hamburg, went on a hike into the jungle earlier this month with a local goat hunter, Henri Haiti, according to Radio New Zealand International.

But Haiti returned alone, telling Dorsch that Ramin was hurt. “There’s been an accident. He needs help,” she quoted him as saying.

When Dorsch, 37, became alarmed and decided to get the police, Haiti tied her to a tree, sexually assaulted her and vanished, according to the newspaper La Depeche de Tahiti.

Dorsch freed herself and alerted authorities, who began an intensive search in the interior of the island, best known as a site from the reality TV show “Survivor.”

After a week of scouring the jungle, police found a campfire on Saturday with human remains that they suspect came from a body that was hacked to pieces and burned. They also said there were indications the body belonged to Ramin.

Police are awaiting DNA tests conducted in Paris for confirmation, and the results are not expected for several weeks.

In addition, a jawbone with prosthetic teeth, melted metal which could come from fillings, and burnt clothing were found. Reports differ as to whether they were found at the campfire or in a nearby valley.

Meanwhile, army officers have begun a search for Haiti, who is missing.

The island, which was the setting for two novels by “Moby-Dick” author Herman Melville, is believed to have a history of cannibalism -- but there are no confirmed instances of it in the last century.

Residents of the island, with a population of approximately 2,000, said the case is baffling.

“No one can believe what has happened,” deputy island mayor Deborah Kimitete said. “This has never happened before. This is the first time, and it’s horrible.”

She added that locals are upset with the attention.

“We do not like headlines,” she said.

Ramin and Dorsch, both economists, reportedly planned to wind up their odyssey in New Zealand next year. In a Facebook post dated Oct. 9, Ramin indicated he would leave Nuku Hiva for the nearby Tuamotu atolls. A friend, Martina Luttgen, replied, “I am stunned and hope for a miracle.”

SeaWorld Orlando Launches Major Expansion

Orlando Sentinal: SeaWorld Orlando has quietly launched a "major redevelopment" that will add several new attractions to the marine park in 2012 and 2013.

The plans, according to government filings and interviews with people familiar with various elements, include transforming a 24-year-old penguin exhibit into a new, possibly Antarctica-themed ride; adding a sea-turtle movie attraction to an existing manatee display; and building a rainforest-themed trail in Discovery Cove, SeaWorld's limited-admission boutique park, that would include a freshwater pool and habitats for primates and otters.

SeaWorld would not discuss details of its plans this week, though it confirmed that it has multiple new attractions in the works.

"We do have plans for incredible new attractions at SeaWorld Orlando, and we're committed to finding amazing new ways to immerse our guests and fans in the mysteries of the sea," SeaWorld spokesman Nick Gollattscheck said. "It's too early to talk about the plans and details right now, but you can expect us to share the news in the near future."

In a sign of how ambitious its plans are, a delegation of top SeaWorld Orlando executives met two weeks ago with more than a half-dozen senior Orange County planning and growth-management officials to alert them to the coming work. The SeaWorld contingent included SeaWorld Orlando President Terry Prather; park vice presidents in charge of finance, design and engineering, and lobbying; and a corporate engineering and creative-development executive.

The SeaWorld executives, according to those at the meeting, sought assurances that their plans would advance rapidly through the county's permitting process.

"They're going to be doing a major redevelopment. They're looking at spending a significant amount of money," said John Smogor, Orange County's planning administrator, though he said the SeaWorld executives did not discuss specific project details.

The Orlando spending surge is an effort by Orlando-based SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment — and its owner, private-equity giant the Blackstone Group — to revive the biggest and most important of their 10 U.S. theme parks. SeaWorld Orlando alone is responsible for roughly one-third of SeaWorld Parks' total earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, according to a recent report by the ratings firm Standard & Poor's.

But SeaWorld Orlando has also struggled during the past 18 months, losing visitors to Universal Orlando and its year-old Wizarding World of Harry Potter themed area. More challenges are looming, with Merlin Entertainments Group preparing to open a nearby Legoland Florida theme park later this month and Walt Disney World in the midst of expanding two of its four parks — including Disney's Animal Kingdom, which, like SeaWorld, is themed around wildlife and conservation.

"SeaWorld desperately needs to keep up with the competition inOrlando, and both Universal and Disney are just throwing money at stuff right now," said Robert Niles, publisher of ThemeParkInsider.com. "If SeaWorld doesn't do anything, it's going to get left behind."

Although SeaWorld won't reveal its plans yet, some details have trickled out.

One of the biggest projects, expected to be completed in 2013, involves Penguin Encounter, a walk-through exhibit that opened in 1987 and displays several different species of penguins, as well as puffins and murres.

SeaWorld employees have been told the exhibit will close in December for an 18-month refurbishment, and one county official said he expects SeaWorld to demolish the building entirely. SeaWorld is currently renovating a back-area avian-research building to make room for the penguins that will be displaced by the construction.

What exactly will replace the penguin exhibit is less clear. There are persistent rumors, first reported by the industry news site ScreamScape.com, that SeaWorld plans to build an indoor "dark ride" in its place. Since August, SeaWorld Orlando has also trademarked a trio of names that could be associated with the project: "Antarctica" and "Empire of the Penguins," both for use as themed areas in an amusement park, and "SnowWorld," for use as an amusement-park attraction.

Separately, SeaWorld is also planning to redevelop its Manatee Rescue attraction, a project expected to debut in 2012. According to a person familiar with details, the plans include renovating a circular theater and using it for an upgraded, sea-turtle movie that will likely be tied in with a theatrical documentary that was released this past summer through SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment's new SeaWorld Pictures film unit.

Documents filed with the South Florida Water Management District confirm that SeaWorld plans to convert the manatee exhibit into a "combination manatee/sea turtle exhibit." SeaWorld last month also trademarked the name "Turtlesphere 360" for use in a theme-park attraction.

Discovery Cove, the high-end boutique park next door to SeaWorld, is also a part of the expansion efforts. Documents filed with the water district and Orange County show that SeaWorld intends to convert a now-closed saltwater reef into a freshwater environment referred to both as the "Flooded Rainforest Trail" and as "Flooded Forest River Trails."

According to the documents, its features will include a "primate island" and an otter-viewing area.

Hotel Movie Rentals Start to Rise

USA Today: LodgeNet's bid to reverse the recession-era slide in hotel-movie rentals is having some success, LodgeNet CEO Scott Peterson tells Hotel Check-In.

"We're getting more people in our video store," Peterson told me the other day during our phone call. "We're selling more tickets."

Though the gains are not huge, Peterson finds them encouraging.

So what's changing? People are, after all, increasingly bringing their iPads and other mobile devices with them and watching movies on them, vs. clicking on a pay-per-view titles. (As @SitInFirst told me via Twitter, "with iPads, who needs to pay for in-room movies any more?")

The answer: Over the summer, LodgeNet dropped the price of older Hollywood titles to as low as $4.99, though most hover at around $10. The lower price apparently tempts more guests to click on the pay-per-view movie menu.

Want a truly current Hollywood blockbuster, such as The Help, before it hits the DVD shelves? Well, then expect to shell out top dollar, around $15 or even $18 - plus tax (see "Limitless" photo above).

Among the movies available now in hotel rooms served by LodgeNet: Hangover II, Cowboys and Aliens and The Help, which will be released as DVDs in December.

In late June and early July, Peterson says, LodgeNet's revenue from Hollywood titles (as opposed to adult-content titles) rose by roughly 5%, which marked the first increase since the start of the recession. We'll know whether or not the increase continued in August and September in the coming weeks when LodgeNet holds its third-quarter earnings results later this month.

The rentals of XXX-rated movies, by the way, haven't started to rise and pricing remains the same, he says.

LodgeNet provides pay-per-view programming to 1.8 million hotel rooms, many of which are operated by Marriott, Holiday Inn-parent InterContinental Hotels Group and Hilton.

Virgin Atlantic Phasing Out Salt & Pepper Shakers

Daily Mail: It would seem that Upper Class passengers on Virgin Atlantic feel entitled to a little extra something after paying thousands on flights.

The aeroplane-shaped salt and pepper sets which accompany gourmet meals on the airline's flights have became a 'must-steal' item among travellers since they were introduced more than 12 years ago.

They regularly crop up on eBay, with individual pieces selling for up to £20 each - but this is set to come to an end.

It has been announced that they are being phased out after thousands were 'pinched'.

Virgin said that from next month it will replace all of the Upper Class cutlery and dining ware sets, including the coveted cruets.

Spokeswoman Janine Doy said: 'Who could have guessed that salt and pepper pots designed for our aircraft would one day be found in homes all over the world, and we are thankful to our Upper Class passengers for spreading the message around the globe.

'Having so many people pinching our salt and pepper pots is, I suppose, a back-handed tribute to how well these items have been designed.

'We're expecting a last-minute rush when fans realise that their supply is coming to an end. Prices for "liberated" examples may also increase as they do in any market when stock becomes scarce.'

Such has been the rate of theft that recent versions were stamped with the message 'Pinched from Virgin Atlantic' as a deterrent, but they still went missing.

The pots, in the shape of miniature planes, were created by Virgin Atlantic's in-house design team.

Reality TV Driving Travel Trends

Mykonos, Greece
Breaking Travel News: Reality TV is all the rage at the moment and so, apparently, are its destination choices.

Cheapflights.co.uk, the UK’s leading website for travel deals comparison, finds an increase in popularity among its users for destinations where different reality shows were filmed recently.

The biggest climber is Mykonos in Greece with a whopping 89 per cent jump in search to date after X Factor Judge Tulisa took her singing hopefuls there to compete for a position as a finalist in the show. Having aired only last weekend, this is a significant increase within just a few days.

The second biggest climber is Cannes in the South of France, driven by the show Made in Chelsea. Its popularity rose by 39 per cent to date since the episode aired on 12 June 2011.

Hot on its heels and tied in third place with 5 per cent increases each are Barcelona and Miami, both X-Factor destinations, with the former serving as Louis Walsh’s choice and the latter as Kelly Rowland’s.

Reality TV cooking show, Gordon’s Great Escape, drove interest to South East Asia up by 4 per cent to date since the show aired in May with destinations such as India, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysia, where the show was filmed, benefitting from being featured on the celebrity chef’s programme.

Made in Chelsea rival Geordie Shore helped increase interest in Magaluf in Majorca by 4 per cent to date, since the show aired its Magaluf Madness episode on 23 August 2011.

X-Factor judge Gary Barlow’s destination choice, Los Angeles, has only shown a 1 per cent rise so far, but that may increase further in the coming weeks as travellers go in search of winter sun.

“Following in the footsteps of celebrity holiday choices has long been a travel trend, particularly in the last few years,” says Nadine Hallak, Travel Expert for Cheapflights.co.uk.

“So it makes even more sense that this trend would cross over into mimicking the lives and travel habits of the stars of reality TV given their status as ‘regular people’ as opposed to Hollywood stars. They represent a more tangible version of celebrity and their destination choices are likely to be more accessible to a wider range of traveller,” adds Hallak.

Another Blow to Tourism in Egypt

Cruise Boat on the Nile River
USA Today: Sunday's deadly clashes in central Cairo - the worst since protesters ousted President Hosni Mubarak in February - are more bad news for Egypt's financially critical tourism industry, already down by more than a third from a year ago.

At least 24 people were killed and nearly 300 injured when Coptic Christians, who make up about 10% of Egypt's population of 80 million, fought with security forces while protesting a recent church attack in the southern Aswan province.

Though the U.S. State Department has not updated its Egypt travel advice since April 28, the British foreign office notes a new Cairo curfew from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. and says travelers should be prepared for "possible delays or diversions."

The current unrest hasn't impacted visitors like Seattle-based travel journalist Chris Gray Faust, who arrived in Cairo Monday from a Nile cruise. Though her tour guide advised her to avoid downtown, she noted no extra airport security in Luxor or Cairo and said the violence "had no effect on the tourist bubble."

Visitors "are still going to the Pyramids and walking along the Corniche, she writes, and "while the incident may have exposed sectarian tensions, Christian/American/foreign tourists are not being targeted."

"People thank us for coming constantly, and are trying at all costs to keep us away from problems," adds Washington, D.C. traveler Marianne Lawrence, who is the middle of a tour that includes Cairo, Aswan and the Red Sea.

The latest violence comes at the start of Egypt's peak tourism season, when an industry that employs one in seven Egyptians had hoped to rebound from the worst slump since a series of terrorist bombings in the 1990s.

But senior assistant tourism minister Hisham Zaazou told NPR News that, despite sharp discounting, tourism revenues are down 35 percent overall in the first half of this year compared with the same period in 2010 - a $3 billion loss.

That's better than the precipitous decline when I visited in March. But last week, notes Gray Faust, only 150 of 400 vessels licensed to cruise the Nile were operating, none more than 50 percent occupied.

"Last night at the market in Aswan," adds Lawrence, "we saw only one other group of tourists...all four of them. It's so sad."

Cable Car to Span London's Thames River

The Docklands: An animation showing the cable car spanning the River Thames between North Greenwich and the Royal Docks has been released.

On Friday London Mayor Boris Johnson revealed the cable car would be sponsored by Dubai-based Emirates, and called the Emirates Air Line. Gondolas, shown in the animation on this page, will carry up to 2,500 people an hour in each direction across the river.

A £36million ($56.6 million) sponsorship deal with air line Emirates over 10 years means Transport for London can recoup 80 per cent of the construction costs. The two cable car stations will be called Emirates Greenwich Peninsula and Emirates Royal Docks.

But the hunt for more sponsorship goes on before the cable cars open next summer.

Mr Johnson said: “There will be further commercial opportunities associated with the stations.”

However Mike Tuffrey, Liberal Democrat London Assembly budget spokesman, said: “Transport for London admit that this sponsorship deal only meets 80 per cent of the construction cost. This leaves many millions of pounds worth of funding to be found from TfL’s budget.”

Lakshadweep – Serene Beaches as Attraction

Lakshadweep is attractive to tourists because of its sandy beaches, turquoise lagoons, opportunity for water sports and its hospitable people. Although there are a large number of suitors, the policy of administration is restrictive for a large number to visit Lakshadweep. The tourism policy followed by government is one of care and consideration to the delicate environment of the islands.
Since the land and other resources are limited and carrying capacity of tiny islands is minimal, tourism in Lakshadweep is conducted on a daytime basis; that too based on sea. Domestic tourists are brought by ship and their night halt is arranged in ships itself, making them board from the islands before night. International tourists stay at Bangaram island and are brought by flight from Kochi to Agatti. Agatti being the nearest island to Bangaram which is having an airport.

Lakshadweep map suggests it to be a group of islands in the Laccadive Sea, situated about two hundred and four hundred and forty kilometers off the coast of the south western state of India, Kerala. Lakshadweep means a lakh of islands but there are only thirty six islands. With a total area of thirty two square kilometers, Lakshadweep is the tiniest union territory in India. Lakshadweep homes twelve atolls, three reefs and five submerged banks. The lagoons, reefs and banks of Lakshadweep are very rich in marine species.
Out of thirty six islands in Lakshadweep, only ten are inhabited. They are Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy.

SPORTS the abbreviated form for society for promotion of Nature tourism and tourism is the nodal agency for promotion of tourism in Lakshadweep. SPORTS has its staff trained in water sports. It also runs restaurants in the tourist islands of Lakshadweep as there is a dearth of restaurants. Private entrepreneurs operate Bangaram Island Resort in Bangaram, Lakshadweep Institute of water sports in Kadamat and the tourist home in Agatti on lease. SPORTS is also part of process by running a tourist home in Kadamat for lease. SPORTS also look after the tourist’s huts in the tourist focal Islands of Kavaratti, Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy. Apart from these huts, three private cottages at Minicoy are operated by local entrepreneurs.
Four all weather ships namely M.V. Bharatseema ,M.V Tipusultan, M.V Aminidivi and M.V Minicoy operate from Kochi to islands. Lakshadweep tours will make necessary arrangements for accessibility. Indian Airlines operate flights from Kochi to Agatti on six weekdays.
Although all islands are blessed with the charm of coral reef, sandy beaches, unpolluted and clear water and hospitable settings, all the islands are not promoted in same way. Some are promoted for diving and water sports and some for tourists to relax and enjoy nature. With the aim of putting less pressure on land the tours are basically sea or lagoon based. There are leisure tours also. There are plenty of opportunities for Scuba diving, Yachting, Pedal boating, Kayaking, Canoeing, Swimming, Snorkeling and sunbathing. One may also visit local houses, Marine museum, LightHouse and a few local industries.
The beaches in Agatti Island are among the more beautiful in India. Agatti holds sugary white beaches, fringed by swaying coconut trees, caressed by soothing winds and holds a spectacular view of sea. Beneath the sea one gets a colorful world full of corals, fishes and turtles.
