Coming to An Airline Near You: Skycouch

eTravelBlackboard: Air New Zealand’s recent introduction of the Skycouch could soon be available on non competing airlines.

Built by seat Manufacturer Ricaro, an Airline told media Air New Zealand is looking to license its skycouch, a trio of three Economy seats that together create a flexible space to relax and stretch out in, an airline official told Flightglobal.

The seats are economy seats with armrests that disappear into the back of the seat, there’s also a trinket tray, a winged headrest and a sleep pillow on every seat.

Skycouches are priced somewhere in-between economy and premium economy, to purchase a skycouch customers must first purchase two economy seats and a ‘skycouch’ fee for the middle seat.

Boeing has not added the product to its list of cabin features for the 787 Dreamliner, however Air New Zealand said it is open to installing the product on its new 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft which it expects to take delivery of in 2014.

The Skycouches unique design makes it different to other Economy seats, with a touch of a button the trio seats transform, a footrest will come out from under each of the three seats which you can pull up to create a flat and flexible space.

The economy Skycouch is currently available on Air New Zealand’s new 777-300 planes, flying daily between Auckland, Los Angeles and London.
